On October 18th, 2024, Acumen Digital's CEO, Ayo Onasanya, joined a panel of tech pioneers on News Central TV’s Fafanua Afrika segment, hosted by Blessing Mosugu. Together, they explored the topic, "Harnessing Tech for Sustainable Development: How African Youth are Shaping the Future."

It’s not every day you get to sit in on a conversation about the future of Africa’s tech landscape, especially with industry leaders who are driving change in real time. Last Friday, Ayo Onasanya took to News Central’s panel to talk on one of today’s most important topics. He shared his perspectives on the opportunities and challenges that Africa’s tech ecosystem faces, particularly from the youth-driven angle.

When asked if the continent was tech friendly, Ayo didn't mince his words: "It is a resounding yes," he affirmed. He highlighted the strides Nigeria has made in tech, especially within the payment systems, where bank transfers are often instantaneous, a feat not commonly found even in more developed nations. But as with any budding tech environment, challenges remain. Ayo stressed that while progress is being made, especially in fintech, "there's still a lot that can be done." Open banking, for example, is one area he’s particularly excited about. This policy, which encourages competition among banks, has the potential to revolutionize financial services in the region and provide further growth opportunities.

Nevertheless, he reminded viewers that lack of basic resources and amenities are realities faced by many young Africans. Before we can talk about sustainable development or the future, Ayo pointed out that people need their basic needs met. “For someone who can't even see beyond tonight, they don't know what they're going to feed on... it might be a little tricky for them to discuss the next 20 or 50 years.”

As the conversation shifted to community tech hubs. Ayo explained that while Lagos, Nairobi, and other cities have established tech hubs, more should be done to serve underrepresented regions. He emphasized the need for these tech hubs to expand to underserved regions. “The hub is to serve the underserved and the unserved,” he said, urging for more inclusive distribution of innovation centers across the continent.

Ayo's insights were honest and refreshing. From discussing the transformative power of tech in Nigeria to acknowledging the very real challenges and lack of access, it’s clear that the future of Africa’s tech scene is both bright and complex.
